Journal Entry 1 by greenbadger from St Albans, Hertfordshire United Kingdom on Thursday, August 30, 2012
This excellent and gripping story is feminist literature from the 70s but is still totally relevant today.
Connie Ramos is a Mexican-American who has had only violence from most of the men in her life. As her situation in the present day worsens she starts to receive visitors from the future. After she defends herself against her niece's pimp her family put her into a mental hospital to keep her out of the way. Her appalling treatment in the hospital contrasts with her spending more and more of her time travelling to a Utopian future. Reality or hallucination?
Connie's two visions of the future seemed to me to be an important warning to the present.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Sending to Nell-Lu as a book ray. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!
This just arrived -- thanks, greenbadger! I'll put it to the top of my TBR list and read it as soon as I finish my current book (A Message to the Planet by Iris Murdoch).
Thanks for sharing, greenbadger. I'm delighted to have read this book. I thought it was excellent: an emotionally gripping story, but also a critique of attitudes towards gender, health and notions of value. Fabulous stuff!
I've packaged it up and will take it to the Post Office this afternoon.

This has arrived safely in the Alps, thanks so much. It looks like I'm last in line on this ray for now, and as I have a number of rings which rolled in recently (never rains but it pours?) so I may put it to the side for a while. Please let me know if this is not the case and I'll tackle this sooner. Thanks for sending!

It had been a number of years since I'd read a Marge Piercy and I'd forgotten how much I appreciate this author. I was quite amazed to realize how long ago this was written. Unfortunately it feels like a lot of the issues are still totally relevant. Once I saw the date I did realize that there's a somewhat hippie-like flavor to the utopian society, but that didn't disturb me in the least. Here as a ring, I'm already thinking of buying a copy to let others read.
I have the next address but probably won't have time to make a parcel before the weekend. So glad to have been able to read this - thanks!

Received - with a lovely postcard from Mauritius - thank you! I have one ray and one wishlist tag to read first but should not hold this up too long.

I was surprised by this book, very original, empathic and interesting story. The reality came out very strong and it has not dated at all, whereas the utopian element was a bit fluffy, but it all pulled off at the end.
Thank you so much for sharing! Will be sending this to the next reader shortly.

Currently reading it; I will ask for Edwardstreet's address, in order to pass it on immediately after I finish reading it.
After reading around 80-90 pages of this book, I just can't get into it... :(
I'm sorry, this is no reflection on its quality, it is just not the right book for me at this time.
So the right thing will be to let it move on to its next reader.
I alread have Edwardstreet's address, so the book will soon be on its way to New Zealand.
Thanks for sharing, Greenbadger, and for your flexibility with me!!

A cold winter's day and there propped against my doorway a book has just been delivered all the way from Spain. Housework- or a day reading beside the heater?
Thanks for the lovely surprise. I will read quickly a genre that is not my usual fare and send onto the next reader.
I tried very hard but could not get into this- so off to the next reader on the list
