Being rather late to the author table at the Nottingham Uncon, this was the earliest available book in the series. However Stephen Booth is such a nice chap that I bought it anyway. So I come in at number 4 which means that characters are already established and I am missing some backstory. However it didn't matter since there were enough pointers for the main traits and relationships to make sense. The main setting for this are the caves near Castleton which I've been past many times but never visited. Since this story emphasises how creepy and scary they are, I'm not sure I ever will! I wasn't totally convinced by the characters of the three old friends, or the behaviour of the younger two, but they were consistent. Another minor niggle was Martin 'stuffing his face' - a weaker, less evocative verb would have sufficed for me. Nonetheless the plot was hooky and the narrative pacy so I went on to the next.

Since signed-with-name this is a PC book but it is, as ever, available for loan. At the moment it is reserved for Cassiopaeia who has since lent me the first two in the series.
