I came across this fair-condition trade paperback, on sale at the Used Book Superstore, and thought it looked entertaining: a collection of essays on a wide variety of topics, from pitchman Ron Popeil to pit bulls. He ponders why, with so many varieties of mustard on the market, there's effectively only one type of ketchup (this could be argued, of course, but since tomato-based sauces with less-traditional "ketchup" flavorings tend to be called something other than "ketchup" - or "catsup" - perhaps that explains it). He goes into "hair dye and the hidden history of postwar America", looking at - among other things - the ways in which marketing changed the perception of coloring one's hair. He interviews Cesar "Dog Whisperere" Millan about dog behaviors, delves into questions of plagiarism, and examines why some people choke under pressure (and looks at the difference between choking and panicking). And much, much more, readable and thought-provoking.
