I had enjoyed Parkhurst's previous novel and looked forward to reading this one. It did not disappoint! While I never watch reality shows, I found the use of a reality show to be a great device to put characters together in a pressure cooker. Although the show's producers are looking for drama, tension and dialogue, the interior monologues from several characters helped tell the story of their progress in completing the worldwide scavenger hunt as well as in confronting their own challenges. Realistic, subtle tension between Laura (mother) and Carrie (daughter) as well as the other characters trying - literally and figuratively - to find their place in the world.

Thanks for sending this from the Bookstogive's General Literature VBB! I actually read this one before journalling. I wasn't planning to read this book now, but after reading a few pages I wanted to finish and see what happens to the characters.

My Review: This was such a wonderful book! I really enjoyed it. I watch a few contest type of reality shows, this reminds me of The Amazing Race. It's a scavenger hunt all over the world for partners/couples. The characters were so different and interesting. Each pair has a secret/story and the people who run the show are trying to get them to reveal their story in the most salacious way. The Laura character appealed to me most. I was really rooting for her to have a happy ending. (I'm not going to tell you if she has one, you'll just have to read the book.) ;-)

Saved for a bookbox.

Received today as a selection from the General Literature VBB. Thank you so much!

I really enjoyed reading this book... much more than I even expected! The chapters were each told from the viewpoint of one of the characters, which kept the writing fresh and interesting and the pace snappy. This was the kind of book that I picked up saying, "I'll just read a chapter," and then the next thing I knew, I had inhaled five or six chapters easily.

This is an easy read, but not "fluff." I would say that it is literary fiction that is eminently readable. Definitely a quick read, but one with substance. At least four of the main characters were quite compelling and I enjoyed having an inside view into their thoughts, feelings, and motivations.

Enjoyable and recommended!

Reserving for the General Literature VBB.

Description from Amazon:

"What do a suburban mom, her troubled daughter, divorced brothers, former child stars, born-again Christians, and young millionaires have in common? They have all been selected to compete on LOST AND FOUND, the daring new reality show. In teams of two, they will race across the globe -- from Egypt to England, from Japan to Sweden -- to battle for a million-dollar prize. They must decipher encrypted clues, recover mysterious artifacts, and outwit their opponents to stay in play.

Yet what started as a lark turns deadly serious as the number of players is whittled down, temptations beckon, and the bonds between partners strain and unravel. The question now is not only who will capture the final prize, but at what cost."

I picked this one off my bookshelf without remembering its description, and it did not disappoint. I found myself interested in the characters and what would happen. I was most interested in Abby and whether she would be able to accept herself as she truly is.

I'll take this book with me to the 2019 Bookcrossing Convention in Mainz.

Loved the description of this book in the bookswapping game, it sounds a bit like the Hunger games books, so glad I won it!

Journal Entry 15 by teachie at High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire United Kingdom on Saturday, August 1, 2020
This is nothing like The Hunger Games, although it is set around a reality TV show. The characters are couples and they work in their pairs to find where they need to go and the items they need to collect. Each character heads a different chapter so we get to see things from their perspective plus finding out their innermost secrets.
A good read with well developed characters, some more likeable than others.
I am taking this to release at the uncon in October....Covid permitting
