What a great reading experience! “Half of a Yellow Sun” in one of those books that slowly grips you into its story and makes you ponder on the terrible hardships that the Africans have gone through due to tribal wars and corrupt leaders, many times, supported by the Europeans.

The book takes place in the late 1960’s, during the civil war in Nigeria. Here we find two sisters - Olanna and Kainene - who come from a very wealthy family, but do not flee the country when the war starts. They believe that a new nation of prosperity will emerge, but the persecutions, the arbitrary executions and the hunger that come with the conflict make their dreams turn to sand.

Although a tough issue, the book is written in a very beautiful and compassionate way. The terrible things that are done in the name of war are not hidden and you feel appalled with what fanatics can do to human beings. But, you don’t give up on the characters and, in the end, despite some sadness, there is relief that life can start again.
