Set in the deep American south between the wars, this is the classic tale of Celie, a young poor black girl. Raped repeatedly by her father, she loses two children and then is married off to a man who treats her no better than a slave. She is separated from her sister Nettie and dreams of becoming like the glamorous Shug Avery, a singer and rebellious black woman who has taken charge of her own destiny. Gradually Celie discovers the support of women that enables her to leave the past behind and begin a new life.

To be released at tonight's Belfast BookCrossers meet-up. We're usually in the snug, to the right as you go into the pub, and any books not picked up during the evening are left on the windowsill...

Thank you for picking up this book, and I hope you enjoy it. You have not only found yourself a book, but a whole community of book-lovers dedicated to sharing books with each other and the world at large.

I hope you will make a journal entry letting me know that this book has found a good home with you. You can do this anonymously if you wish. When you finish the book, please visit here again and share what you thought about the book.

Feel free to read and keep the book, or pass it on to a friend, or even set it free 'in the wild' for someone else to find like you did.

If you register you will be alerted by email each time someone makes another journal entry. It's completely confidential (you're known only by your screen name and no-one is ever given your email address), totally free, and spam-free.

Saw this at the book-crossing meet up and picked it up as I knew I hadn't read it (and it was always on my list having received so much attention over the years).
The first few pages are graphic, grabbing your interest and barely letting go until half-way through when it eases back and rounds itself out somewhat. Alice Walker is a great story-teller and a deserved winner of the Pulitzer prize!
I'm going to ask around and see which of my friends hasn't read this, and then pass it on.

I too have always meant to read this, and here it is, caught at tonight's meetup in Belfast!

So glad I finally got around to reading this book. My main impression was the strength of character of Celie, and also illustrating how people can change through the course of their lives. 'Can' but often don't, and the cynical side of me thinks the story is not very believable in that respect. It slowed down a lot towards the end and took me a while to finish because of this, and the happy ending was kind of unexpected.
