Coming-of-age novel about Phyllisia, a teenage transplant to Harlem from the West Indies, who feels overwhelmed by New York, abused by her classmates, and held in contempt by her own father.

Phyllisia longs to fit in with the popular kids, but the only person in her class who wants to be her friend is Edith, a classmate who swears, steals, shows up at school hours late, and wears clothes that are dirty and ragged. Being friends with Edith, Phyllisia fears, would only lead to more abuse from the other kids at school. But slowly she begins to realize that Edith has something special to offer her.

I won't give away the plot twists, but this is a compelling novel about a girl who, in struggling to make sense of the world around her, learns something about her family, about friendship, and most of all, about herself.
