Any book that is described as like reading Elmore Leonard for the first time, and comes with an endorsement by Leonard, gets a prize for piquing my interest.
This is the author’s first novel, and although it really isn’t as good as Elmore Leonard (what could be?), it is pretty damn good. Fast-paced and exciting, it doesn’t have EL’s witty dialogue – in fact, Winter manages to write dialogue without using any quotation marks, which is a neat trick, a weird style that is difficult to take at first, but which you quickly get used to because of the book’s pace. And the book really is a page-turner. Great movie potential, but a good read, too.
