I found this only-slightly-battered paperback at the Used Book Superstore, and thought I'd pick it up for a release copy.

As with so many classics (and this might be one of the hallmarks of a classic) I got very different things from the book on my most recent reading than I had when I first read it.

[Some spoilers follow.]

Initially I was all sympathy for Heathcliff, and thought Cathy a fool not to stick with him; even when he turned brutal I had a tenderness for him, and I found the second generation of Wuthering Heights residents much less interesting than Heathcliff himself. But on later readings I began to find that second generation much more interesting, especially as they tried to work their way out of the cycle of violence and cruelty that they'd been born into. While I still felt sympathy for Heathcliff I wasn't as ready to think that all the women should have given up everything to be with him, and I see the story more as the history of an abusive family than as a romance. It's still a ripping good yarn, though!

Side note (a very flippant side note) - here's the Wuthering Heights entry from Haiku U:

Wild. Strange. A bit damp.
Heathcliff waits for Cathy's ghost.
Women. Always late.

I left this book on a bench outside of Red's Eats at around 1 or so, while stopping by for their famous lobster rolls with some friends. Hope the finder enjoys the book!
