The End of the Pier

This is Martha Grimes' attempt to escape the Richard Jury trap and write a mystery outside her established series. It's not entirely successful,
but makes a reasonably satisfying book to read while traveling; it can be put down and picked up repeatedly. I found her later novels set in the same universe - Hotel Paradise and Colt Flat Junction - to hold my interest better because the child who tells the stories is amusing. This novel has multiple viewpoints, and no character has quite the attention-grabbing style of Emma in the other two Up-state NY novels.
