After reading and loving "The other Boleyn girl", I was very anxious to read Philippa Gregory's latest ...
The setting takes place after the death of Henry VIII, when his only son, Edward, takes the throne, but turns out to be a very young and frail boy...
And who will be the next king or queen ? There's Mary, Katherine of Aragon's daugther, who wants to restore the Catholic faith in England, and then Elizabeth, Anne Boleyn's daugther ...
The story is told from the point of view of Hannah, a Jewish girl whose family fled the Inquisition in Spain, and by unforeseen circumstances is taken into the service at court as a "holy fool". There she watches as Mary and then Elizabeth, struggle for their crown...
I've always been very interested in English history, and one of my favourites has always been Elizabeth I. I read the book by Rosalind Miles, which I also enjoyed but focused on Elizabeth's life after she became queen. This book tells us more of how her life must've been before, and her relationship with her sister Mary.
Like all other of her books that I've read, Philippa Gregory is successful in re-creating the atmosphere and historical details of the time, and her characters are just unforgettable...

I don't know what to say exactly about this book. I liked the historical part, I've learned a lot about the reign of Mary Tudor (portrait on the side), the plots for succession, the Inquisition, the political games of Europe, etc. What a life of pain for all of them!
But at the same time there are too much details that say nothing, and the dynamic would be better if the book was 1/3 shorter.
