"Fair is foul and foul is fair
Hover through the fog and filthy air."

Three witches open the action by chanting the phrase that sets the ominous tone. Ambition motivates Lord and Lady Macbeth as they offer Duncan, the King, a last supper. But the removal of Duncan only leaves Macbeth with a host of new considerations. The prophecies of the witches have said that Banquo's sons, and not Macbeth's, will rule one day.

Can this be allowed to occur? Must not Macbeth make sure that only his sons will succeed to the throne? And what is to be done with the disloyal Macduff, who did not attend the coronation of Macbeth and is now rumored to be in England gathering forces with Malcolm, Duncan's son?

The witches again proclaim and Macbeth awaits the arrival of forces intending to unseat him. Have the witches betrayed him by seducing him to his own doom?
