This book is a little mysterious! Both myself, Flutterbies9, and my sister, rainbow3, have copies of this and have both thought we left a copy with our mother - who gave this book back to rainbow3. However, whether it originated with rainbow3 or Fluteries9 it is time it travelled further, so here it is registered :-)

Fantastic Fiction review.

" Be prepared to meet three unforgettable women:

Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone.

Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her seventeenth white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son, who died while his bosses looked the other way. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken.

Minny, Aibileen's best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody's business, but she can't mind her tongue, so she's lost yet another job. Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town to know her reputation. But her new boss has secrets of her own.

Seemingly as different from one another as can be, these women will nonetheless come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk. And why? Because they are suffocating within the lines that define their town and their times. And sometimes lines are made to be crossed.

In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't."

My copy of this book was received as a 2010 Secret Santa book within the book club to which I belong. In the event, it resided on tbr until April 2011 when I read it and was so enthralled that I took it back to the group and several other members also then read it. Somehow I managed to receive it back and it stayed with me for a while until I thought that mother may well like to read it.

I read this book before the film version (though I'm told that the film was, unusually, fairly true to the book) and I found it fascinating. It is written in a revelatory fashion with Skeeter providing the originating driving force behind the desire to tell the story of the maids who raised the children. As the story progresses, the women take shape and their determination to engage with the changing world in a positive fashion becomes stronger, the employers and others who are anxious to hold on to their secrets and prejudices become more strident and the dichotomy of the two worlds becomes more exposed. This is a book I can recommend as the well observed tale unfolds in unusual ways to reveal unspoken prejudices and racism in many forms, yet retains the strength of the individual characters and hope for change and the future.

This book has given me four nights of sleep deprivation, as I just couldn't put it down! I have spoken with friends about it and plan to see the film, as I understand that is just as good.
I hope the next reader enjoys it as much as I have!

[These notes prepared - 20 June 2012 - added July 4 2012.] Huge THANK YOU’s to Flutterbies9 for registering ‘The Help by Kathryn Stockett’ for me, and apologies for this delayed journal entry. Hoping to get access to the internet while away and register and release this, and as you know events interceded so your help with some holiday releases is very much appreciated.

I picked this up in Aberdeen at Mum’s while packing for the boat trip to Orkney, Saturday, June 9, 2012. It was hurriedly I tucked into my luggage for release on holiday. I have my own copy of this and mean to and read it then return here with some review thoughts when I get a chance.

[These notes prepared - 26 June 2012 - added July 4 2012. I don’t know why I have never thought of releasing a book here before, but am really thrilled to pieces I did this time as it was “caught” see above. I wonder where HBpencil left the book?]

On Wednesday, June 20, 2012 around 21:00, I left this book in Orkney, while on holiday. Popping into the facilities building at the Point of Ness, Caravan and Camping Park, in Stromness, I whipped into the TV room dropped this book on a coffee table and leaving some folk watching footy I scooted. My not-so-stealthy bookcrossing drop-off complete I was satisfied. The Help was the thirteenth bookcrossing book released on my holiday!

Before the drop-off Mum and I enjoyed fish and chips while sitting in the car on the Point of Ness car park beside the camping grounds. It’s quite the tradition with us to sit here on least a couple of evenings watching some expert fishers at work, for we always see a host of sea birds and among them, terns, and divers, cormorants, or shags. There are always seals here too. Usually we also spot one or two skua’s those enormous pestiferous sky-diving thieves. I just love watching the terns. Their flight is highly watchable as they are so able to manoeuver and they are simply so very elegant!

There is usually one fisherman on the Point of Ness with a rod. Mum pointed out this year we have never seen one catch anything and they always seem so unaware of the experts all around them... ...or maybe they are just studiously ignoring them?

This was a holiday with way more medical incidents than was preferable [though all seems on an even keel now] and access to wi-fi zones was continually just out of my grasp, so I’m happy to at last, now I have access to the internet again, to post some notes of where this book was released.

If you've found this book and you're new to this, (((welcome))) to bookcrossing! Please, once ready, pass this book on to other readers to keep it travelling!

Leaving bookcrossing books in cafes, waiting rooms, public areas with information stands, and sheltered places (plastic bags are useful here) in beauty spots makes for great surprises for others! HAPPY READING!

The last book I released was picked up by a litter collector. I felt so sad about it, I didn't want to risk that happening again. So instead I have past it on to a close friend whom I know will enjoy it as much as I did. It also gave me the chance to explain to her about bookcrossings so hopefully we have another follower! Thank you for leaving this book for me in the camp site in Stromness.
