I found this first-in-series to be better than most. A promising start for this author, providing a glimpse into the very competitive, one could almost say cutthroat, world of antiques collectors. There were enough twists and turns to keep me turning the pages, and a variety of interesting characters.

I also liked Jaymie's three-legged dog, Hoppy, who doesn't let this disability slow him down at all :-).

Book Description
Release date: May 1, 2012 | Series: A Vintage Kitchen Mystery (Book 1)
A Hoosier to die for?

When vintage cookware and cookbook collector Jaymie Leighton spies an original 1920s Hoosier brand kitchen cabinet at an estate auction, it’s love at first sight. Despite the protests of her sister that the 19th-century yellow-brick house they share in Michigan is already too cluttered with Jaymie’s “junk,” she successfully outbids the other buyers and triumphantly takes home her Hoosier.

But that night on the summer porch where they’ve left the Hoosier to be cleaned up, a man is murdered, struck on the head with the steel meat grinder that is part of the cabinet. Who is this stranger—and what was he doing on their porch? Does his death have anything to do with the Hoosier?

As the police struggle to determine the man’s identity, Jaymie can’t help doing a little digging on her own, accompanied by her three-legged Yorkie Poo, Hopalong. But in her bid to uncover the truth about the hidden secrets of the Hoosier, Jaymie may be the one who ends up going, going…gone.

I finally began reading this - gosh, it's been on my shelf already eight years! How time flies when you are busy reading. I'm currently reading my grandpa's (born in 1889) memoir for the first time and he can be really boring at times, so I need another, completely different type of book to balance things... At least I now know from where comes the habit of keeping old notes and newspaper clippings. But imagine this - when he went to Paris in 1912 he stayed in a hotel on Blvd St-Michelle - and so did I when I went there on my own nearly a hundred years later!
This book started off nicely. I'm glad I've avoided auctions. Been in one and didn't bid anything. I think I also know the next reader for this.

This story resembles real life:
Old Mrs. Stubb says:"Women my age...it's not good to be woken up suddenly."
Mom was ninety and still sleeping when her home care nurse rang the doorbell and came in with her key, thus waking Mom. She had jumped up from her bed, taken a fall and snapped the neck of her femur. It was downhill from then on for her.

Like Daniel, I once borrowed money to a good friend for her enterprise, which did not work out the way she had planned and that did affect our frienship - gratitude is something people have hard time being in. And then she was murdered.

Finished. I guess the writer forgot her vintage kitchen theme soon after the beginning, but this was an ok read all the same.
I'm putting together a parcel, so this will hopefully soon travel to a new home.

Very nice cozy mystery! I would have loved to hear more about the vintage part / kitchen, food, dishes - but of course this is mystery after all.
