Thursday Next Five

With the Stupidity Surplus reaching dangerously high levels all over England, Acme Carpets employee and undercover SpecOps investigator Next has her hands full trying to persuade her 16-year-old slacker son, Friday, to join the ChronoGuard, which deals with temporal stability; if Friday continues to sleep away his future, the end is near—for everyone. To complicate matters, a malicious apprentice begins making classic works of literature into reality book shows (Pride and Prejudice becomes The Bennets), a ruthless corporation tries to turn the Bookworld into a tourist trap, and the Cheese Enforcement Agency tries to bust Next for smuggling killer curd. The fate of the world may lie in a Longfellow poem.

Update, October 22th 2012: Apparently it was not so easy for Jasper Fforde to get Thursday & Co. back up and running – some of the narrative constructions seemed a bit strained. Moreover I found it a bit strange that smart Thursday pulls together her Uncle Mycroft's apparition and the problems of the ChronoGuard only so very late in the course of events. Plus nobody seems to care much about the fact, that Aornis will be able to leave her prison loop as soon as time travel stops. And, speaking of travelling: Why can't Jurisfiction agents find a way into the Holmes series when Mycroft could seek refuge there without any difficulty reported at his time?

A lot of questions... and an amount of illogicalness I did not expect with Jasper Fforde. This will not stop me though to read the other parts of the series as soon as I can lay my hands on them.

Thanks for the ring! The book will soon travel return to sender.
