Picked this up at a yard sale, to share w/ BC.

'When Ellen Dahl Maitland's battered body was found in a hot-sheet motel, it created a minor scandal, the kind that Dahl money and power helped quiet quickly. A suspect was arrested; he skipped bond and was never heard from again. And there were those who thought Ellen's less-than-loving husband, Robert Maitland, might have had something to do with the murder, but nothing was ever proven. Still, the rumors were more than a petty annoyance, especially now that Maitland has decided to make his run for the governor's mansion. As he's done in the past, Maitland sees an opportunity to make political hay out of Ellen's death, and that's when he turns to Phoebe Siegel.
Phoebe doesn't like Maitland, doesn't like the idea of trying to find something new on an old case, and almost loses her cool (though not her Blue Norther cold) when he goes public about hiring her. Complicating matters are some personal concerns: her relationship with Kyle Old Wolf is beginning to deepen, and her brother Michael's feelings for a woman seem to be moving him away from his vows as a priest. It is not a good winter for Phoebe.
And it gets worse. Someone takes a shot at her that just misses being fatal and the more Phoebe digs in to the past, the higher the body count rises. The more she learns about the life of Ellen Dahl, the less she likes the people who surrounded the young woman, a self-proclaimed wallflower who wanted only to be loved for herself. The roots of the tragedy are buried deeply, and what Phoebe finally unearths leaves her in a moral quandry of shattering proportions.'
