From the back cover: "It is 1864 and as a train pulls out from Waterloo station, bound for the south coast of England, Lizzie Martin considers her future. It is not without regret that she is leaving her friend Inspector Ben Ross from Scotland Yard, to whom she has formed an attachment. However, an acquaintance of her aunt has sent her to be a companion to his young niece, Lucy Craven, who is staying with his two elderly sisters in the New Forest while recovering from the tragic death of her baby. Lizzie's task is not one to relish and matters are made worse by Lucy's denial that her baby is dead. Then events take a darker turn when a rat-catcher is found murdered in the grounds of Shore House, and Lucy is discovered beside the body, crying and covered in blood."

Finished reading this book yesterday, on November 17, 2019. An easy read - - the author uses the writing style of identifying at the beginning of each chapter which character is telling that particular aspect of the story, from their perspective, between the two main characters of Lizzie Martin and Inspector Ben Ross.
