Bought at the lovely Gutter Bookshop in Dublin during the release walk at the 2012 bookcrossing convention.

Much as I loved Room, I think I like Emma Donoghue's historical novels better - she does such a great job of evoking the spirit of a time period. In this book, she explores the changing ideas about women's roles in late Victorian England. Fido runs her own printing company and is deeply committed to "The Cause", women's rights. Her old friend Helen, who she meets again after years apart, is seeking freedom of a different sort, carrying on affairs as an escape from an unhappy marriage. When her husband seeks a divorce, the scandal threatens to destroy both women, and their renewed friendship.
