This is a great little book made in response to the Los Angeles riots of 1992(?). Eve Bunting is a well-known writer of historical fiction for young adults and children. David Diaz, the illustrator, won the Caldecott Medal for his illustrations, ingeniously painted on or framed in backgrounds made out found objects left from the riots.

I'm including it in my books to send to military personnel overseas because it seems that since 1992, a major image in my life has been that of the black smoke of conflict.

For children, the noise and black smoke are all the more disturbing. This book deals with the bonds of friendship forged out of the smoke and debris of conflict.

I think the military personnel will enjoy this and perhaps, if the opportunity arises, enjoy sharing it with children -- perhaps in orphanages, displaced persons shelters, hospitals -- in areas where the fallout of conflict is a daily occurence.

I am, for that reason, releasing several copies into the wild, in the hopes that they go to Iraq.

I have the opportunity to pass it on to a military person overseas through Marine Corps Moms' collecting things to send overseas in a Thanksgiving and Christmas shipment from Blue Haven drop off points in the Dallas Fort Worth area, so this one is going. Books were on the wish list.

It's always nice to read about your own country in representative literature when overseas.

I thought this would be a good way to increase a catch rate on books and a fun way to keep military personnel overseas involved at home.

Luisa's really hoping to hear back from whoever finds one of the books we dropped off for armed forces in the middle east....
