The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie: A Flavia de Luce Mystery (Flavia de Luce Mysteries)
12 journalers for this copy...
I just added this to my wish list last week after seeing another BCer's recommendation in the forum, and I happened upon a copy today at Goodwill for $1 so I couldn't resist it! From the back cover:
It is the summer of 1950–and at the once-grand mansion of Buckshaw, young Flavia de Luce, an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison, is intrigued by a series of inexplicable events: A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Then, hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath.
For Flavia, who is both appalled and delighted, life begins in earnest when murder comes to Buckshaw. “I wish I could say I was afraid, but I wasn’t. Quite the contrary. This was by far the most interesting thing that had ever happened to me in my entire life.”
ETA: Reserved for mathgirl40 in the wish list tag game (as soon as I get it read).

I read this one in a single lazy Saturday yesterday. It was delightful!! This is the first in the Flavia de Luce mystery series, and I loved it. British manor houses and inns, a precocious and lovable heroine, dastardly plots, and a satisfying ending. I will definitely be looking for the next in the series!
Will send to mathgirl40 this week.

Sent to mathgirl40 as part of the Wish List Tag game. Enjoy!
Thank you, glade1, for sending this wishlist book! I've heard very good things about this series and am looking forward to starting it.
I enjoyed this mystery very much. I love Bradley's witty writing and Flavia de Luce is a wonderful character. I definitely plan to read the next books in the series. Thanks again, glade1, for sending this book to Canada.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a fun, quick read. I really like the young, smart perspective. And I always enjoy English country house mysteries!
Back in my hands now, and reserved for another BookCrosser.
Added to the Cross-Canada Bookbox.
Okay, know I understand or remember why I took this book out of the book box yesterday. THIS is the first book and I was passed the second book at the meetup.
Now I am really interested in getting started on these Flavia books.
Now I am really interested in getting started on these Flavia books.
At the last Calgary Bookcrossers meetup, I was passed the third Flavia de Luce novel with the usual "oh, you just have to read this one!" The author's name was familiar and when I looked to see what else he has written, I just knew that I had better move this book to the top of my TBR pile brazenly shoving all the other book out of its way!
What a great story! Eleven year old Flavia giving the police inspector a lecture about poisons amount other things. I am very happy to start the second book, because I was passed that one also. It is terrible when they tease you with the first few pages of the next book, so many other books on my TBR pile, but you just can't stop Flavia de Luce!
Did you know that Alan Bradley is a 70 year old Canadian gentleman who has retired in Kelowna, BC?!
I might just have to save this book for the next Canadian Literature exchange, or bring it back to the group, push it across the table and say "you gotta read this one!".

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
I am very happy to bring this book to the group tomorrow. I think that Flavia will give the next reader as much joy as she gave me.
Picked up this book at the Calgary BookCrossing February meet-up. Looks like a cute mystery.
What a cute little mystery. Flavia is so amusing. The author writes so vividly, too. The way he describes things was so refreshing. I also didn't realize that Alan Bradley was Canadian. I totally thought that the author was from the UK. Bring on the next book!
Passing on this book the next reader at the Calgary BookCrossing March meet-up.
My daughter brought this home from the meetup and still hasn't journaled it. Where oh where did I go wrong? Taking this back to the next meetup.
Bringing all three Flavia de Luce books back to the group. Hope the next reader enjoys these books as much as we did.
Picked up at BC meeting
This is a great story. Loved Flavia's character, though some other characters are rather flat (take Daffy, for instance, who is always reading, can show deep insight when moved to comment on events, but doesn't actually DO anything much through the whole book?).
taking to BC meeting
Safely in my hands
Reading, reading on ereaders, listening to....just can't get into it.....
I am taking this book to our monthly bookcrossers meet up at Cravings - the second Saturday of every month- to pass on to the next reader.
Picked up at the November meeting.

Picked this up at the Christmas themed December BookCrossing meeting. We had 13 members attend (largest meeting since April, yeah) and of course stacks of books. This has been added to my TBR mountain.

Haven't started this book yet
I got right into this book from the first page. It had me intrigued and then following Flavia through her adventure and detective work kept me reading. It was very well written and look forward to #2
looking forward to reading
Flavia is an awesome character and an interesting read!
No new takers this month so holding it for the next name on the sticky note -- crossing-guard.
Where does all the time go, I somehow missed journalling these after the November meeting. My apologizes, they are safely with me!
Finally got around to reading book 1 after hearing how great the series is. I enjoyed it alright but think the next one will be even better as I already know the characters. I have number 3 on my bookshelf, now to track down number 2.
