"'Every persisting mariage is based on fear,' said Peregrine. 'Fear is fundamental, you dig down in human nature and what's at the bottom? Mean spiteful cruel self-regarding fear, whether it makes you put the boot in or whether it makes you cower. As for marriage, people simply settle into positions of domination and submission. Of course they sometimes 'grow together' or 'achieve a harmony', since you have to deal rationally with a source of terror in your life...'"

"There was no fog now. Twilight had just been overtaken by darkness, and a bright fierce little moon was shinning, dimming the stars and pouring metallic brilliance onto the sea and animating the land with the ghostly intent presesces of quiet rocks and trees. The sky was clear blackish-blue, entertaining the abundant light of the moon but unillumined by it. The earth and its objects were a thick fuzzy brown. Shadows were strong, and the brooding identity of everything I passed so powerful that I kept nervously looking back. The silence was vast, different in quality from the foggy silence of the morning, punctured now and then by an owl's cry of the barking of a distant dog."
