This is the novelisation of the original screenplay by Deric Washburn of the movie of the same name that starred Robert De Niro, John Cazale, John Savage, Meryl Streep and Christopher Walken.

The book is not quite as powerful as the movie, but everyone knows the basics of the story. Three young steelworkers (Michael, Nick and Steven) from a small hill town in Pennsylvania who all go off to fight in Vietnam. Nothing could prepare them for war in the jungles of Asia ... nothing except the heelish heat of the blast furnaces ... gut-seering boilermakers ... the trailer life ... and the strength of their passion for hunting the great deer of the Alleghenies. Which of them would survive?

Michael and Nick are also both in love with Linda, who seems to juggle both of the men, and before leaving for Vietnam they all celebrated a goodbye at Steven's wedding and with one last deer hunt. In Vietnam they are captured by the enemy and forced to play a game of Russian Roulette. They escape and return home, but their lives are forever changed. Nick stays in Vietnam, Michael returns to Linda, and Steven is handicapped after losing a leg in the war.
