"Dead girl walking," the boys say in the halls.

“Tell us your secrets,” the girls whisper, one toilet to another.

I am that girl.

I am the space between my thighs, daylight shining through.

I am the bones they want, wired on a porcelain frame.

Lia is eighteen. She is 5 feet 5 inches tall. She weighs less than 100 pounds, and her former best friend Cassie has just been found dead, alone in a motel room.

Wintergirls was written by Laurie Halse Anderson, who (along with all the other authors involved in the project) has waived her royalties for this special World Book Night edition.

World Book Night is a special promotion to help spread the love of reading real books, and there are events taking place this year in several countries - this is the first year that the US is part of this celebration of reading.

On April 23, 2012 (or shortly afterwards), 25,000 volunteer book givers throughout the country will each give away 20 copies of one of 30 books - and you've found one!

For more information about World Book Night, go to http://www.us.worldbooknight.org. There you can find out about the program, the books and who chose them, the donors, World Book Night in other countries, and more.
