In Laurie Viera Rigler's first novel, Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict, twentyfirst-century Austen fan Courtney Stone found herself in Regency England occupying the body of one Jane Mansfield- with comic and romantic consequences. Now, in Rude Awakenings of a Jane Austen Addict, Jane Mansfield awakens in the urban madness of twenty-first-century L.A.-in Courtney's body. With no knowledge of Courtney's life, let alone her world-with its horseless carriages and shiny glass box in which tiny figures act out her favorite book, Pride and Prejudice, and tiny boxes you talk into-Jane is over her head. Especially when she falls for a handsome young gentleman. Can a girl from Regency England make sense of a world in which kissing and flirting and even the sexual act raise no matrimonial expectations?

I find myself enjoying this less than the Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict, because all the thing about this mystical fortune teller just turns me off. I realize that the story is based on a fantastical notion of body/mind switching, through time, no less, so to complain a character that seems too magical is weird, but that fortune teller really spoils the story for me.

The internal chattering and analysis of the main character thins my patience too... and I did have the same complain with Courtney's story.

Despite all this complains I did enjoy the story. I kind of want to re-read Confessions too, to compare notes.

Well, it took me a while to get to this, but it was worth waiting. I found the book very enjoyable and exactly what I needed right now, a fun and light-hearted read to take my mind away from all the stressful things of the past year.

Journal Entry 8 by bookguide at Wijchen, Gelderland Netherlands on Monday, July 8, 2019
Ah, Jane Austen addicts, I've known a few. How could I resist this title when I saw it lying on the table at the biggest Dutch-speaking BC meeting of the year? Now I get it home and realise it came from Azuki, who I spoke to briefly in Mainz whilst peering through the window of a synagogue, and has also belonged to Annimanni, who I believe has sent me wishlist books in the past. Not to mention rodespringbal who I always seem to miss speaking to in Castricum. I'm looking forward to reading this, though who knows when that will be.
