I have had this for a while, and I don't think I'll get around to reading it anytime soon.

"Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit(1985), Jeanette Winterson's much-praised first novel, features a protagonist also named Jeanette who is adopted into an evangelical household in the dour industrial midlands of England. There heathens are everywhere, especially next door, and Jeanette is brought up to believe that she is one of God's elect. But as she grows older, and comes to terms with her preference for her own sex, the peculiar balance of her God-fearing household crumbles as her mother, pastor, and flock go to work on Jeanette's demons, denouncing her has someone "to whom it is impossible to speak the truth." Jeanette's insistance on listening to the truths of her own heart and mind provides an unforgettable chronicle of an eccentric and moving rite of passage into adulthood."

Delighted to receive this book in trade from AnnaKY. Will journal again when I've finished reading.

I read this in one evening and was rather disappointed. The reviews had me eager to read it, but I just couldn't get into it. Although I knew going in what sort of family life Jeannette had and broke free from, the whole fanatical Christian missionary segments really annoyed me. I would have rebelled too if that was my family!

I couldn't finish this. I found it disappointing and it is definitely not my cup of tea. I'm hoping to send it to a good home.
