L'engle's "time trilogy" is a classic of young adult sci-fi. I didn't know that when I first picked up this book, though. All I knew was that there was a unicorn on the cover.

Mom kept telling me that Planet was a rather tough book for my age (seven). Wouldn't I rather start with A Wrinkle In Time which happened to be the first book in the series anyway?

Wrinkle had a flying centaur on the cover. That was pretty cool. But unicorns were my favorite. So, no thanks! I can read this one just fine.

The first chapter was, to my seven-year-old tastes, long and boring and political and completely devoid of unicorns and I almost didn't make it through.

On my most recent reread, however, I found it fascinating and touching all at once, giving us as it does our only real up close glimpse of tragic Mom O'Keefe, and the second chapter (where we do meet that unicorn) came far too quickly.

Anyway, I'm giving away almost all my paperback copies of these books and hanging onto the hardback set. (The exception is the paperback given to me by my second grade teacher in which she scribbled a note to me.) May their joy continue to spread!

Released on Sunday, October 19, 2003 at The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado USA.

I'm having breakfast there with another BXer and, in addition to trading books with her, I intend to leave this one hanging around in the lobby of the hotel.

My esteemed colleage may manage to convince me to hand it over to her instead. If she does, I can't swear to resist her wiles and schemes. Maybe I'd better bring a couple more, for backup.

Later:
Left all three books on the table next to the stairs just around the corner from the check-in counter.
