The New Sugar Busters

I've decided I believe in the low-sugar plan. I read this book and another one called Get The Sugar Out, both got good reviews on Amazon. My stepmom has long been a devotee and when I was growing up she wouldn't eat anything that listed sugar as higher than the 5th ingredient. I'm more watching the nutritional label.
there seem to be two theories embodied by the two different books (this one and GTSO). I'll refer to them as the science theory, this one, and the nature theory (GTSO). The Sugar Busters "science theory" of food is pure focus on glycemic values and cutting out sugar. Artificial sweetners are great, potatoes, rice, carrots and, of course, refined flour are out, because they have high glycemic values. I started out there and have added back rice, but I notice that if I have more than one piece of toast with breakfast then I'm back to a mid-morning crash.
the "nature theory" is to avoid processed food and focus on more traditional health food eating. classic sugar is out, but sucanat (dried cane juice I think that is) and "date sugar" are in. Artificial sweeteners are definately out.
I also have skimmed suzanne sommers recent diet book and she has similar themes but makes it really complicated with lots of rules. Which could also be viewed as really simple - just follow the rules and you don't need to understand anything.
Her book and at least one of these talk about how eating fruit with other food complicates digestion and they recommend eating fruit alone as a snack (suzanne says 2 hours before you eat anything else!) I can't bring myself to do that, I love fruit with bfast, but I'm working on it.
All these add up for me to an intelligent application of Atkins. No don't eat fat and meat all the time, eat sensibly - lots of fruits & veggies, fill in with meat, don't be afraid of fat, and avoid sugar and processed flour like the plague. With that attitude in mind, walking a grocery store is like going through a food haunted house, so many things on the shelves are no-nos it's depressing. I snack on nuts & rasins or fruit or cheese & whole wheat crackers now.
When I stick to this well, I notice a big difference in energy levels and mood. But it's so easy to get swung off. I had a big sugar binge recently (got chocolates for my birthday, a new donut place opened nearby) and now I'm having headaches so I'm hoping a few days in a row of good eating and I'll be better. I do notice that less sugar and I am less prone to colds. It's like drinking sugary things turns my throat into a growing medium for germs.
