I am going through some of my many boxes. Mmmmm, many books still unread ...

"A beach book for your brain ... a sexy, intellectual read." -- Redbook

"Fast Women is bright and fresh ... it tells the complete truth about falling in love and the people who do it. Jennifer Crusie has written another wonderfully funny novel."
-- Luanne Rice, author of Firefly Beach.

"Aglow with the sparks of wit and romance .. smart and sassy." -- Kirkus Reviews

I literally roll a dice to see which book I'm going to read next. I assume all books in my TBR are on equal footing, apart from bookrings, of course. I have almost finished Northern Knights by Bobby Hutchinson, c. 1987 and ta-da this one is next.

I am anal enough to have a collection of quotes from books I have read. These ones were added to it ... Take what you like and leave the rest.

"Ouch." Margie looked under the table. "What did I just kick? Why are there boxes under there?"
"My china," Nell said.
"You haven't unpacked your china yet?" Margie sounded scandalized.
"She'll get to it." Suze sent an unmistakable shut-up glare Margie's way.
Margie, of course, missed it. "If she had her china out, she could look at it, and it would make her feel more settled."
"No, it wouldn't," Suze said, still staring at her with intent. "Mine's out and it makes me want to throw up, although that may be because I'm stuck with the butt-ugly Dysart Spode."
"I love looking at my dishes," Margie said sadly over her coffee, which was not news to the rest of the table. Margie had more Franciscan Desert Rose earthernware than any other women on the planet.
Suze finally caught Margie's eye, and Margie straightened, smiling. Nell, wanted to say, "Look, guys, it's all right," but then she'd just have to cope with both of them reassuring her again.
[comment: I had to giggle at this one, instead of boxes of china, I could see myself with boxes of books under the table lol]

Jesus, it was like working with Chloe again. No train of thought at all, just random stations. p50

"You sound awful," Suze said. "What's wrong?"
"Another run-in with Gabe [boss]," Nell said. "Usually the yelling doesn't bother me, but I'm tired today. At least his furniture [from being restored] is back. That should help."
"Maybeyou should stop doing the stuff that makes him yell," Suze said, thinking of Jack.
"I don't think so," Nell said. "Then he'll think yelling is a solution. He apologized before he left and he's taking me to dinner, so that's all right."
[comment: I like Nell's attitude]

**How I feel about the book half way through?
I am just starting to get into it. I felt I had been thrown into a plot that needed more explanation, and the characters seemed rather lacklustre. It's picking up for me, though.

The next night, Gabe listened to Nell out in her office ask Riley if there was anything else he needed before she went home. Marlene's [dog] nails clicked on the hardwood floor as she made her last tour of the reception room, stopping longer at the Christmas tree Nell had put up after he'd told her not to, and Gabe felt the early evening melancholy that had been taking him lately. The place was always different after Nell was gone, as if she took sound and light with her, but that was probably because she always left after five when the whole world got quieter and darker. p215
[comment: I like the piece about "sound and light", as if they are tangible objects.]

"Suze said you and Gabe were an item."
"Well, we got deleted." p343
[comment: as if they were an item of inventory -- clever]

I really enjoyed this Crusie tale, but that wasn't suprising, as I find all her work to be witty, inventive, and completely entertaining.

Thanks very much! :)

Nell Dysart's in trouble. Weighted down by an inexplicable divorce and a loss of appetite for everything, Nell is sleepwalking through life until her best friend finagles a job for her with a shabby little detective agency that has lots of potential and a boss who looks easy to manage.

This was definately not a typical book by Crusie (that I have read). Several times during this book I kept thinking that I was just not getting into the main plot of the book and thought about putting the book down. I couldn't figure out the O&D storyline and where it was going. But Crusie kept dropping little pieces of the storyline and it kept me thinking "ok..one more chapter" and the next chapter would have a little more info that kept me reading. Great book! But definately one that needed a lot of my attention to keep up with the storyline.
