This slim memoir follows a correspondence over 20+ years between the author and the Mark & Co antiquarian bookshop. If I was being generous I would point to the unrequited love affair between Hanff and the ‘idea’ of London, and the social nuances between the stuffy English correspondee (Frank Doel) in post-war England, and the rather acerbic American collector. I’m not really a lover of rare books, I read for the pleasure of reading, and don’t often go back to a book twice, unlike HH. So, truthfully I found the whole exercise a bit dull, the lasting impression of something grey, incomplete and sad.

Also included in this volume is the sequel, Hanff’s diary of a belated (and feted) trip to London.
