Journal Entry 1 by Tmoke from Niles, Michigan USA on Friday, October 10, 2003
This is the story of a woman who abandoned the expectations of her family and struck out to make a new life for herself in a new city, San Francisco. She leaves Boston when her father remarries because she realizes that unless she does she will never have a life of her own. She decided to travel out of reach of her family and to work at typewriting to earn her living, knowing that she will not be able to count on her father's support. But beyond that she wants to be free and independent and able to make her own way. She becomes embroiled in a mystery due to a manuscript left with her for transcription, but it is not the mystery that is the interesting part of this book. It is instead the character of the woman, Caroline who becomes Freemont Jones. A feminist ahead of her time, who struggles against the conventions of life in 1905 to become a person in her own right, capable of standing on her own while still finding fulfilling relationships with others.
