A very curious book, unlike most historical mysteries. It is by far more of a study, or rather an "imagining" of Henry Adams, the great historian and author of one of the most important autobiographies in American letters, The Education of Henry Adams. The story seems to have two labyrinths: the complex business and chincanery of the failed French attempt to build the Panama Canal, and the maze of a melancholic man's mind trying to get at substantial proof. There is no certain way out of either labyrinth. Highly recommended, even if this doesn't give one the usual pleasures that one expects from a mystery novel.
