This is an interesting book following the young woman who is taken from her village to study to become a courtesan. She rebels, breaking free and causing chaos in her wake.
Though the concept is interesting, Lake sometimes feels as though his characters are a little too adrift in this vast world he created. You get the sense that even he wasn't sure where this little story was going for awhile. It's too easy for the reader to stop caring about the protagonist about halfway through - which is death to a first person narrative.
And despite its flaws, "Green" remains a compelling read, if only to see where she ends up.
