Girl in Translation
10 journalers for this copy...
A fascinating story of a young Chinese girl who emigrates to New York City from Hong Kong for a better life. Following the extreme hardships and challenges that she faces and overcomes is very inspirational.
This book is starting on an adventure as a BookRay, traveling to five different countries.
Received this book earlier this week. I'm looking forward to reading it. It may take me a few weeks to get to it as I have several other books ahead of it in line needing to be read. But I will read it as soon as I possibly can and get it on its way again. Thanks for including me.
I just finished reading this book and really enjoyed it. I read it through in less than 2 days it was so hard to put down. I've PM'd imuzak12 for an address so I should get this moving soon. Thanks!
I mailed this book out to the next reader in the ray several days ago but apparently forgot to journal its release. Thanks for the reminder imuzak12!
Thank you valpete for including me for this bookray, and thanks to biisbsw for mailing this book to me@Corpus Christi, Texas :) I'm looking forward to reading this one.
I really enjoyed this book. I too am from an Asian country (Japan) living in the US. Although I moved here in my adulthood and attended college, the experience and emotions I went through were very similar to the ones of Kimberly. I think many foreign exchange students, especially the ones from Asian countries, in the US may enjoy this book as well. It was interesting to read how Kimberly acquired American ways of thinking gradually while keeping and respecting Chinese tradition and background.
I read several reviews by readers who were disappointed of its ending. In a way, I can see why many didn't like the end. Until the certain "issue" happened, I thought the author could had ended the book without epilogue. Because of the "new issue" introduced, she had to write the epilogue. Should she not adding the "issue" so that she didn't need to write epilogue and left everything to readers' imagination? Maybe so. Yet, this "issue" may be much more common than we would wish, and presenting the possible future with clear descriptions in epilogue may encourage readers to think what was the best/better choice for each person.
I already received mailing address of Debbie4osu and am going to mail this book next week.

Just caught this one from imuzak12 in Corpus Christi, TX. I will be reading it and passing it over the pond to okyrhoe. Thanks for letting me be a part of this bookray. I also really like the postcards inside, and will be putting in one from Texas.
Finished the book in two days! I loved reading about the main character's experiences, and the relationship between mother and daughter. The journey continues for this novel by leaving the US, and headed to Greece, to okyrhoe.
Arrived in Athens.
Thanks valpete for including me in the ring, and debbie4osu for posting the book (plus postcards, bookmark, & labels!) to me.
Update:
This was an easygoing and light read, despite its serious subject matter. Even though Kimberly's situation is unique and fascinating, the narrative follows a predictable development, and did not distinguish itself in any particular way.

Sorry to have kept this one for so long; I plead an unexpectedly high workload and a series of 'minor crises'. I've just requested the next reader's address and plan to forward the book on Monday at the latest (10 September).
Update on 9 September:
I've just finished reading this book, and although I found it a little 'less than exciting' at the beginning, it certainly wasn't boring, and I'm glad I didn't give up and pass it on without reading it all.
In some ways it reminded me of my move to Germany from Ireland many years ago, not just becuse of the initial language problems, but also the 'culture shock', which of course wasn't as big a shock for me as it would be for someone moving so young from Hong Kong to the USA.
Jo_an_a has asked me to skip over her for now, since she has recently received several bookrings and rays all at the same time, so I'll be posting this one to Icila in France tomorrow.

This book was better than I expected! It was refreshing to read something that fitted between the covers of just one book, even though I would have gladly read any following parts if there were any.
I've pm'd Boekentrol for the address.
