The Hydrogen Murder: A Gloria Lamerino Mystery

I read another in this series a couple of years ago, and wanted to read more so I recently ordered this book from BetterWorldBooks.com. This is the first in the series.
From the cover -
When physicist Eric Bensen is murdered in his suburban Boston laboratory, scientist-turned-crime-consultant Gloria Lamerino is called in to investigate. A former colleague of the victim, her understanding of Bensen's breakthrough research on hydrogen and superconductivity convinces police detective and almost beau Matt Gennaro that this is a high-stakes crime with no shortage of suspects.
Bensen's research is a mother lode with enormous potential for utilities and big business. But even nasty threats and the ransacking of her apartment don't deter Gloria from exposing large-scale data tampering, deception and fraud by members of Bensen's team. When the person with the most to gain from Bensen's death is murdered, as well, it takes her most brilliant analytical skills to identify a killer - equally determined to make sure this case is Gloria's last.

I wanted to read this now so I can reserve it for an upcoming cozy mystery bookbox. This is the first in the series, and the second one I've read. I enjoy Gloria's close-knit group of friends, but I was confused by her background. This is the first book in the series, yet there are references to her previous work with the police. But that would have been before the series occurs. Usually in these cozies, with main characters who have no police expertise, they are total neophytes, but in this case the author has given Gloria a bit of a background with helping the police in investigations. But she still comes off as inexperienced, despite her supposed background. A bit inconsistent here, at least for me. But other than that confusing background, I enjoyed the story. The murderer wasn't too hard to figure out, nor the clue that led there. Looking forward to reading more of these "intelligent" mysteries. I like the way the author segues into the next one, by referring to the next element she'll be handling.

This was a very good cozy mystery! Almost as good as the Flower Shop mysteries by Kate Collins, but on a different level. I enjoyed the intelligent characters and the character building throughout the book. Gloria is very likable and I really liked that this cozy had natural feeling relationships progressing throughout the story rather than an empty schlocky romance. The mystery was solid and there were lots of quirky characters and red herrings to keep me guessing. The physics aspect of the mystery was good, too. I will probably read more in this series if I can find them.
I will reserve this book to take to my Calgary Bookcrossing group to find a new reader.
Thanks for the fun read, maryzee!

Safely in my hands.
I really enjoyed this cozy murder. I was worried the print was too small, but managed just fine. The small size of the book made it easy to hold #nd seem “cozy”.
Liked the characters, only got annoyed a few times at Gloria’s decisions!

picked up at the Calgary January 2018 meeting
A science-based murder mystery, that's not too heavy on the science.
Holding this one for the next reader.
Definitely a who dun-it mystery with a mix of science in it! Bringing back for the next reader.
This was a pretty good scientific mystery. She is an interesting character even though there were a couple of actions where you want to go "for goodness sakes woman!"
I am taking this to the August meet up at Cravings.
