The most eagerly anticipated adventure novel of the year has arrived. Pulitzer Prize-winning writer John Darnton is about to take you on a fantastic journey that will make you believe the impossible. — Rarely does a first novel capture the imagination of publishing and film insiders the way NEANDERTHAL has. Sold to twelve foreign countries before its publication, a Main Selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club, and the first book that director Steven Spielberg will turn into a movie for Dreamworks, NEANDERTHAL is already an international sensation. It will take you only a few riveting pages to see why:

In the mountains of Northern Asia, a guerrilla fighter vanishes, a schoolgirl is murdered, and an eminent Harvard paleontologist disappears. To a shadowy government agency in Maryland, these are all signs that something has gone terribly wrong with the most extraordinary expedition ever mounted. Matt Mattison and Susan Arnot, who were once lovers and are now academic rivals, are dispatched to find the secret their Harvard mentor was seeking: a species linked to the origins of mankind.

They have existed for over forty thousand years.

They possess powers man cannot even imagine.

And in a world dominated by humans, they are about to alter the face of civilization forever.

John Darnton combines breathtaking suspense, thorough scientific research, and dazzling storytelling as archaeologists and rival governments attempt to track down a relic band of creatures.

NEANDERTHAL. Their time has come.

John Darnton was born in New York City in 1941. He has worked for thirty years as a reporter, editor and foreign correspondent for the NEW YORK TIMES, based in New York, Nigeria, Kenya, Spain, Poland, and the United Kingdom. He has won the George Polk Award for his coverage of Africa and Eastern Europe, and in 1982 was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for stories smuggled out of Poland during martial law. He is married to Nina Darnton, also a journalist. They have 2 daughters, Kyra and Liza, and a son, Jamie. They live in London, where Darnton is bureau chief of the New York Times.
