Born in 1941, Eileen Tumulty is raised by her Irish immigrant parents in Woodside, Queens, in an apartment where the mood swings between heartbreak and hilarity, depending on how much alcohol has been consumed. From an early age, Eileen wished that she lived somewhere else. She sets her sights on upper class Bronxville, New York, and an American Dream is born.

Driven by this longing, Eileen places her stock and love in Ed Leary, a handsome young scientist, and with him begins a family. Over the years Eileen encourages her husband to want more: a better job, better friends, a better house. It slowly becomes clear that his growing reluctance is part of a deeper, more incomprehensive psychological shift. An inescapable darkness enters their lives, and Eileen and Ed and their son Connell try desperately to hold together a semblance of the reality they have known, and to preserve, against long odds, an idea they have cherished of the future.

This book caught me by surprise.
The start is all growing up in NY by Irish immigrant parents, trying to combat alcohol and life in poverty, and live the American dream. When Eileen meets the love of her life, or rather the man she thinks she can cast as the love of her life, she is really ambitious on his behalf and wants him to rise quickly. However, complications....
Alzheimer!
Thus the second half of the book is all about coping with a person who gets Alzheimer at an early age. Quite a different struggle, and priorities in life changes dramatically.

This book was nothing like I expected. And I'm saying that as a good thing. I really enjoyed reading this book, and it's now up for grabs!

The summer is over, and I now have a pile of books that want to continue their journey!

I will bring this book to the Bookcrossing meetup today, and if nobody wants it, I'll leave it in the shelves at Oslo Visitor Centre.

I am an American mom spending two weeks traveling with my husband and three young sons from Berlin up to Oslo and I found this book today at the Oslo visitor center. I am beyond excited to have found Book Crossing and will take this one back to Minnesota with me to continue it’s journey.
