The Awakening (Darkest Powers, Book 2)

This is book two of the Darkest Powers Trilogy - I have enjoyed all 3 of them and so have my teenage children. We are looking forward to meeting Kelley Armstrong at
When Words Collide 2012 Product Description
Book II in the Darkest Powers trilogy takes us deeper into a world where the supernatural intrudes on the everyday with riveting effect.
If you had met me a few weeks ago, you probably would have described me as an average teenage girl – someone normal. Now my life has changed forever and I’m as far away from normal as it gets. A living science experiment – not only can I see ghosts, but I was genetically altered by a group of people who call themselves The Edison Group. What does that mean? For starters, I’m a teenage necromancer whose powers are out of control: I raise the dead without even trying. Trust me, that is not a power you want to have. Ever.
I’m running for my life with three of my supernatural friends – a charming sorcerer, a cynical werewolf, and a disgruntled witch – and we have to find someone who can help us gain our freedom back before The Edison Group finds us first. Or die trying.

First off, let me say that more books should be rough-cut, it's just so wonderfully tactile.
This book really draws you in and its very fast paced, but I was just dying for a bit of world-building halfway though. A lot of it has to do with character view points, the reader only knows as much as the characters, and they know very little, but it gets confusing, especially when combined with the fact that almost everyone has another agenda and is lying to each other.

Picked up this book at the Calgary BookCrossing September meet-up. Well, I was given the rest of this series, so I might as well keep going. I'm assured the series gets better, so here's hoping.

I don't know what it is about this series. I just can't get into it. The more I read, the more I can't stand it. Chloe's whole thing about viewing the world through movie tropes really gets on my nerves. And I just want to throttle Tori. Yes, there are bitchy girls in the world, but no one is that annoying all the time. And what's the point? If you need a bitchy girl, there has to be a point. The dialogue feels forced at times, too. I know this is teen fiction and I shouldn't be expecting a thought provoking read, but a bit more complexity would be nice.
