Acquired from my favourite second-hand bookshop in Darlington-the Lions in Blackwellgate Arcade. I had read about this book in the papers so thought I needed to get on and read it

The blurb on the front cover says 'Read this book and fall back in love with life'. It does exactly this. I thought given the subject that this novel might be a bit maudling, smaltzchy even. It is anything but. The author writes beautifully without over-sentimentality about living with this horrific condition. At times, his humour spills over (the names ascribed to the hospital staff), at others his despair and sadness (the passage about his son playing hangman particularly). It's a terrifying novel in one respect as you ponder the thought that it could happen to you. Whether I would have the strength of character to endure, I'm not so sure but this book is testament to the amazing ability of humans to find ways of coping with the most horrific of circumstances.
