Pulitzer prize winner. Sweet story. Misfit of a man, raised in bad conditions, moves to Newfoundland from Upstate New York. He is returning to his family's own land, and once there slowly pieces together a happy life for himself and his daughters. Odd thing was it is also a gentle exposure of how his upbringing scarred him; mostly because of the hints we recieve of how his parents were raised on this bleak Canadian provice.

Somehow this book walked on its little Ballycumber feet from St. Paul to the Caribou Coffee in Mendota Heights, which now has a neighborhood bookshelf. I'll plan to reread it, then re-release it for next year's Canada Day Release Challenge.
The best part of this book, IMHO, is the very detailed description of what it's like to live in Newfoundland. The geography and the fishing industry completely shape the story. Since it's unlikely that I'll ever get there myself, I really appreciated this chance to experience it vicariously.
Here's something i almost never say: the movie is as good as the book maybe even better. The reasons are some fantastic acting performances, especially by Cate Blanchett and Judi Dench. Also, there's haunting, eerie soundtrack that helps to build the mood. But I think you might find the story perplexing if you hadn't read the book first. Also, you'd miss all those neat parts about knots. So read the book!
