A bit of an odd book this, I didn’t find it laugh-out-loud funny, but enjoyed the great cast of weird and wonderful members of the Starkadder family – although they reminded me more of folk from deepest, darkest Suffolk than E.Sussex ;-) I loved the way that our heroine Flora Poste set out to sort out her ‘untidy’ family of cousins as a bit of a jolly gap-year project. I’ve read that this book was written as a parody of the trend of ‘earthy passionate’ novels of the time (written in 1932); I wouldn’t know anything about that, but its quite good fun nonetheless.

I know for a fact that this was found, because a Hobbiton guide (of course Middle Earth is in New Zealand) radioed our tour group to see if a book had been left behind! Hopefully someone will find and journal, or my stunning coup de grace would be in vain
