This book caught my eye in the self of recycled books in Kamppi. I have made it my habit to check the shelves there when ever I'm passing by to search for interesting books to take with me. The theme of emotionally disturbed children and teachers made me take this book with me. More comments after I have read the book. Thanks for leaving it on the shelves! It was a pleasant surprise to find a book there, that was already registered here.
I'm moving some unread books to availables. I might still read this if I'll have time before the book wants to meet new readers :) It's really compact in size, it would be a could read while travelling or it would be easy to mail somewhere.
Ok, I begun reading this one and I've enjoyed the book. I'm half way through at the moment and chapter 11 was really captivating, it tells about an incident when Mary and Dan take the children hiking. The book reminds me of Torey Hayden books I've read but the focus is more on the teacher than the children I think. An interesting twist for me is how the writer describes her first steps in the profession of teacher, uneducated and unexperienced (well, she has raised her own kids), but how she has "something" and how she finds the answers in herself and somehow I'm a bit irritated at the story, how well things go, she has problems but yet she's a success as a teacher (first she worked as a volunteer, then as a substitute teacher and then she is offered a teaching post at the same school). But I try not to mind the romantic view of teaching too much but enjoy the adventure and that the book provokes me to think. It's interesting to read about how one learns to be a teacher by doing and how many problems just need to be tackled by common sense and just trying to figure out something.
I love this book, I really can relate to teacher Mary. She writes about how the most important skill a teacher needs is to throw her plans aside and act according to the situation.

A moving story. Teaching Brian to eat, taking children to swimming pool even if no one dares to enter the water at first, co-operation with another teacher... These are some things I remember from the book right now. Who wants to read this one next? I recommend it for people who are interested in reading about teaching and dealing with children with special needs.
