took a while to get into this but once I did, it was a good read - set in Cairo at the time of the first Gulf War, it tells of a changing society through the lives of the residents of the Yacoubian Building.
off to kiwiinengland as part of the international VBB. Posted surface mail - hope you don't mind, and perhaps we will get lucky and it will end up on a plane!

Hurrah, it has arrived. I am looking forward to reading this, as it looks fairly light (or maybe I *am* judging a book by its cover). I do find it interesting how most of the translated into English books from Africa or the Middle East are such serious pieces. I'm beginning to think it is a way to ignore a lot of fiction enjoyed by women...

Initially I thought this book was "chick lit" as it introduced many characters who intertwined in one way or another. I was reminded of the film Love Actually.
But as the story progressed I had a rethink. This is a very interesting book that shows corruption and how it invades all of society. It shows the radicalisation of youth, and the socially acceptable abuse of women. It caused me to think a lot about the way societies as a whole develop.
