This book examines, among other things, female genital mutilation practices in Africa. Alice Walker is unflinchingly straightforward, while being compassionate, angry, and somehow, in the end, hopeful. I think it's a testament to Walker's skill as a writer that she could take such a political and uncomfortable topic and create a readable, human story.

The story was told in short, journal-like chapters by each of the characters in turn. I read it in about 4 days. I have always found a certain lyrical quality in Alice Walker's writing and it shines again here. Reading made me feel sorrow, anger, joy, hatred, love, but most of all, hope. Just lovely.

Just got this book yesterday as part of a book exchange. Thanks, tita! I can't wait to read it. And I'm so glad you enjoyed Lahiri's short stories. I've been busy as all gitall at work, so one lovely book at a time, then I shall release this one as well. Aloha!
