I bought this book from a second hand book stall. I have read others by the same author and have enjoyed them all. This one tells the true story of a small girl who was being abused and how the author managed to help her in her time of need. It is very harrowing at times but as I expected a good ending I stuck with it.
This book was given to my friend to read and later return to me for release.

Torey Hayden has the trick of very quickly drawing the reader into the world of the disturbed children that she works with and making you care about what happens to them. In this case Jade is an elective mute at school but because this is Torey's area of specialism she very quickly coaxes her into speaking. Gradually Jade begins to open up but her revelations become increasingly bizarre and Torey is torn between thinking that something very wrong is going on in her homelife or that the child is a manipulative fantasist.
This book certainly makes you realise what a fine line the professionals tread between protecting the child or wading in with insufficient evidence.
Eventually Torey's hand is forced and it is reassuring to find that she appears to have made the right decision.
