From a charity shop.

A girl is adopted by a Pentecostal family, a strange upbringing indeed. Her mother is very strict, she tries to keep her daughter away from the "unnatural" ones, or non-believers, so that much of Jeanette's schooling is done at home. At school, she is very much the outsider, with the other students unable to relate to her. Her mother takes it badly when Jeanette falls for another girl at the church, going against her strict beliefs.

Winterson's style makes this a quick read, sucking you quickly into the narrative. This is a good coming of age novel, rather quirky with biblical references thrown in. A short 1001 book, loosely biographical, proving that truth is often stranger than fiction.

Received this morning. Thanks for sending. I like Winterson and I've been wanting to read this one for a while.

I liked this. It had a bit of quirkiness about it. I loved some of the church women. They were marvellous. Maybe not my favourite one by the author, but definitely a good read.

Thanks for sending it to me Soffitta1.

This has been damaged due to a damp problem in the house so unfortunately has gone to the great bookshelf in the sky.
