I don't think "Horror" accurately describe the genre of this book. More like "Political Thriller with Zombies." The post-zombie apocalypse world is just a backdrop for something bigger. So don't fret that this book has zombies; it's nothing like Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies. I enjoyed the vast world Mira Grant has created; the details are phenomenal. Also doesn't hurt that one of the characters is named Buffy.

The year was 2014. We had cured cancer. We had beat the common cold. But in doing so we created something new, something terrible that no one could stop. The infection spread, virus blocks taking over bodies and minds with one, unstoppable command: FEED.
NOW, twenty years after the Rising, Georgia and Shaun Mason are on the trail of the biggest story of their lives-the dark conspiracy behind the infected. The truth will out, even if it kills them.

Very well written! Best post-zombie apocalypse I've ever read. It's also the only one I've ever read, but that's besides the point. I like that it takes place after the zombie apocalypse has occured, and that as I always believed was more realistic, the whole world didn't die - just a good portion.
If you don't like zombies, or political conspiracies, or fanatics, this is not a good book for you. Most of the book was really about the political campaign for the next president and the constant impact zombies have on society and life, rather than having actual zombies on the page, but that okay.
Most of the twists were fairly predictable, or at least very well foreshadowed. But I was very impressed that this book actually managed to throw out a twist that I did not see coming and boogled my mind!
Also, along the lines of predictability, being a book with zombies and conspiracies, you know people are going to die. And most of the people who I predicted would die, and the author threw in others who I hadn't considered. This reminded me of a debate I had once in which I maintained that no matter how the story is set up an author can kill off any character so long as it is written correctly. While my friend maintained that there were limitations to who can be killed depending on the set up of the characters, plot, point of view, etc. Well, this book is a good example that when done correctly, you really can kill off any character in a story.
Thanks for the thrilling read!

Taken to get together at the Joshua Tree cafe
Brilliant book! It really strikes the right balance between creepy believable and not giving me nightmares. I loved that the characters were all really realistic, unlike typical horror characters, which are often just archetypes. I loved the inserted blog posts. The world building was fantastic. Looking forward to the next one.
Taken back to the Calgary Bookcrossing Meeting.

Picked this up at August's meeting, once again came home with too many books!
Fantastic novel, I loved it!!!! CAN'T WAIT to read the next one. I read this current one in Vegas while on vacation and I kept finding myself wondering if there was a book store around where I could get the second one. Please find me one.... :)
The author created a fantastic world that I believed and enjoyed learning more about. I loved that the book took place after the zombie apocalypse and while zombies played a large part, the book was more about a political campaign. This was very effectively used, I didn't forget that the zombies were there but they were usually in the background making it so that the characters lived, not just reacted to zombies everywhere. Interesting look at society and how fear could cripple our modern society...

Picked this up at the November meeting at the Joshua Tree Cafe. The pile is looking precarious. I hear you sneak reading this when you shouldn't!
OK - wasn't sure about my wisdom of reading this over Christmas but ... Ok I couldn't put it down. Was not a problem when I woke before everyone else as I curled up with this. It just grabs hold of you. I am not a zombie person, but this was way more than zombies - political intrigue, mystery, character development..... Loved it.
Picked up at the boookcrossing christmas tea today. So many positive reviews on this book! I picked it up for the cover (thought it was a mystery thriller) but was coerced nto taking it home after trying to give it back when i found out it's a zombie book (you know who you are ^_~). Not a big zombie person, but I'll give it an honest try!
Took this to the High Tea to pass on as I won't be at the next meeting.
This was more of a political thriller and a really great read. I was up until 4 in the morning (on a worknight) forcing myself to finish the book before going to sleep and then I rushed to the library and borrowed the next two books in the series! (and then I went and bought a copy to distribute on my own...)
The plot was a little predictable but I loved the thought that went into the culture of a zombie-infected world, the research behind the virus, and the fact that the book wasn't much of a zombie book (as promised)!
Will be brought to the next Calgary bookcrossing meetup and handed off.

I picked this book up at the meeting today - Adding it to Mt TBR :)
This doesn't happen very often, but I stopped and started this book multiple times over the past couple years and no matter what I just couldn't get into it :( I had to force myself to finish book one and just can't carry on with the rest of the series. I am so sorry - I just felt like I was reading the Nora Roberts of Science Fiction - too predictable, didn't enjoy the writing and dirt bike /zombie thing at the beginning of book one just didn't do it for me.
I really, really, really tried to like it, but I just didn't.......

This was a quick read. I wasn't really feeling it for the first 2/3 of this book, but the end did turn it around for me.
Some of the commentary made on main stream media, alternate news sources, and fake news are actually quite relevant in today's political reality.
I'll stick around for the next one in this series.
