The Summer Tree by Guy Gavriel Kay is the first book in the Fionavar Tapestry trilogy. Five people from our world cross over into Fionavar, first among worlds. Brought across on the pretext of a festival, they suddenly find themselves intimately involved in Fionavar's affairs.

Quite dramatic in parts, this is high fantasy with a heart. Kay has built a complex world with complex characters. Even the minor characters come to life.

Kay now has eight books to his name and has matured a lot in his writing. These days he tends to base his stories in earthy history rather than airy high fantasy. However, this first book stands strong and I'm very fond of it and the rest of the trilogy.
