Papillon

"Henri Charrière, called Papillon, for the butterfly tattoo on his chest, was convicted in Paris in 1931 for a murder he did not commit. When he was sentenced to life imprisonment in the penal colony of French Guiana, one thought obsessed him: escape. After planning and executing a series of treacherous yet failed attempts over many years, Papillon was eventually sent to the notorious prison, Devil's Island, a place from which no one had ever escaped -- that was, until Papillon. His escape, described in breathless detail, was one of the most incredible tests of human cunning, will, and endurance.
In 1968, more than twenty years after his final escape, Charrière had his astonishing autobiography, Papillon, published in France to instant acclaim -- a worldwide bestseller describing the gripping, shocking odyssey of the author's imprisonment and escape over a greuling decade."
Sain taannoin pienen lastin kirjojani takaisin sukulaiseltani. Olin vuosien mittaan antanut lukemiani kirjoja hänelle matkalukemiseksi.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
I spotted this on your wishlist. Happy Convention and Happy Reading!

My goodness, you are my wishlist book-fairy...thank you so much!

Time sure flew by with this thick book. It's an adventure-packed autobiographical novel that feels like Cool Hand Luke meets Steve McQueen meets The Beat generation. That's also where my problem with it lies, as I'm not a fan of that type of freewheeling, unaccountable machismo.
The guy was no saint. If he was sent off as a wrongly convicted murderer, he sure became an actual one. If he wasn't a statutory rapist before, he also became that too.
Luckily, I didn't need to like the guy in order to enjoy this "travelogue", of sorts, and his numerous attempts of escaping every single prison, many times with substantial ingenuity!
