Read in March 2007. I picked up this copy at a later date for bookcrossing. Unfortunately I didn't make very detailed book notes. Irene Nemirovsky was a successful French writer, she was also Jewish. In 1941 she started writing a book that would evoke the lives of people in wartime France. It was to consist of five parts - she only lived to write two of them. The manuscript was saved by her daughter Denise who thought it was a journal. It was only 65 years later that the novel was discovered and published.

From my notes:

"Highly recommended. I loved this book! I think it is the first time that I have found reading the appendices of a book poignant. Excerpts from her journal and letters her husband wrote in order to find her after her arrest, added to the strong feeling of reality in the novel. She had the ability to make you feel as if you were really there during the exodus from Paris."
