I liked this book as did my book group. I suggested they read it and it was enjoyed by everyone. Pretty gripping with good historical background

This could have been a good book, but is simply too long. I enjoyed the first half of this novel, with the portrayal of the main character and depiction of life in post war Britain. The lasting effects that WW1 had on both soldiers and civilians were sensitively described and reveal the damage incurred by so many families.

The start of the main character's investigation into the death of his long-ago friend are interesting too, but as this murder mystery progresses, the book got more and more confusing. There are simply too many characters and I got confused with who's who.

I usually romp through a book, but this one dragged on and on with more and more characters being introduced and red herrings. There are lots of holes in the 'investigation' half of the story which involves huge coincidences, and the villain is suddenly revealed and decides to tell all. Why?

Edit
Controlled release: I passed this book to paganfrog when Inkognitoh and I met up with her in Golspie.

This found its way to the book table at the Colchester Uncon last weekend. Heaven-Ali said it was good and insisted I read it. Had to bring it home after that, didn't I?

But I never did read it! I'm not sure why, so I shall put it on my wishlist and get round to it eventually.

On the shelf to the left as you go into the back room.
